RSVP Volunteer Terry Bass sent the following photo to me after seeing it in the January 2 Los Angeles Times Book Review. Jared Sydney Torrance (the founder of our city) ran his Real Estate business out of the same building that our own RSVP office now occupies. Hope told me that they found a bunch of his "Property for Sale" posters up in the attic when they were cleaning up the inside of the building prior to taking it over for RSVP. She thinks that the building on the left is actually on the site where our office is . Terry tells me that the photo was actually taken on Central Street in South L.A. but Hope thinks that it might still be Post Avenue. Whichever is the case, the picture is still an interesting one and the details are under investigation.
Hope has just come up with the following information on this interesting item:
"1339 Post was once a real estate office of the Torrance Family. The information that I got was that when they were rehabbing our building and securing the brick to be earthquake safe, they found some historical "for sale" signs in the attic. Thinking they has some historical value the signs were given to the Torrance Historical Society were they are now housed. The Society is to the south of our building and was once the first library of Torrance. RSVP of South Bay was the first to rent this once famous building. The renovation didn't cover all the old building elements. If you are in the conference room in our building and open up a medium door that houses our power controls for the building you will be able to see the original brick building which was covered up with modern wallboard".
If anyone has additional background on our building's interesting history, please either e-mail your Web Editor at pporter@socal.rr.com or call the office at (310) 320-3322 .
