A NICE STORY
(Maxine Trevethen - RSVP)
Dr. Lucy Ching Lucy Ching has been a client of Torrance Meals on Wheels since 1995. I have been delivering meals to her for the past two or three years. She lives alone in the Sunset Gardens complex on Crenshaw Blvd. Just recently she was chosen as one of the authors to be honored at the Palos Verdes Women’s Club annual Books and Authors Luncheon held at the Torrance Marriott Hotel. Lucy spoke about her book (written in 1980, and updated in 1995) titled "One of the Lucky Ones." It is available at the PV Library - and probably from local bookstores. Lucy is a remarkable and inspiring person. I try to spend a little extra time with her when I make my delivery to her on Wednesdays. She always says to me, "Maxine, you are so kind." It makes my day!!

Dr. Lucy Ching - One of the Lucky Ones (Autobiography - Inspiring true story ot a girl’s triumph over blindness)

Lucy Ching was born in Guangzhou, China into a comfortable, traditional, and stable family. Blinded at six months Lucy was subjected to the prejudices and superstitions accorded all disabled persons in the society of that day. Her family moved to Hong Kong in 1949. Due to her exceptional accomplishments in her schooling, she was granted a scholarship for specialist training at the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston. From there she studied music at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Texas. Lucy returned to Hong Kong determined to improve conditions for the blind. In 1959, at the age of 23, she was appointed Group Worker of the Government’s Club for the Blind. By 1975, it was believed that she had helped more than 7,000 unsighted people, either by teaching in classes, counseling, or giving special training. In 1978, she was given the responsibility for all blind welfare on the entire Hong Kong Island.

Dr. Ching’s "crowning glory" award was to be honored as a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire - (She also holds a Degree of Doctor of Laws - honoris causa).

Lucy Ching now lives in Torrance.
