THE MAD HATTERS
(Hope Witkowsky - RSVP)
Making Hats (1)Making Hats (2)Remember the time when doing handiwork with knitting or sewing was all the rage. It seems like those days are fast becoming a thing of the past. But not so fast with dismissing this craft as a dying art. There are so many seniors that love to knit and do crafts.

Now there is an opportunity to turn a hobby into a life-changing gift for children in need. These seniors are volunteers with RSVP of South Bay and really do know how to have fun while making a valuable contribution at the same time. Each Monday morning you can find this group of dedicated individuals at Greenwood Park center decorating donated baseball hats, knitting baby blankets, hats and booties for infants that will be donated to the Millers Children’s Hospital in Long Beach. Imagine those children who have to be in a hospital during the fun times of the year at Easter, Halloween and Christmas! They are not with their family or friends and probably frightened. Imagine the look of the volunteer’s faces when they present their gift of love to these children.

They even have people who work from their home because of limited mobility or accessibility to transportation. So everyone can be a partner in this outstanding project.

The decorated items are donated to the children in the hospital three times a year. Most of these children come from low-income families and these gifts are extra special to them.

If you have the gift of a craft skill, then this may be the volunteer opportunity for you. You can phone the RSVP of South Bay office to find out how you can become a member of this team. Call 310-320-3322
