MEALS ON WHEELS with RSVP

Delivering the Meal Dr. Lucy gets ready to eat

I met with Maxine Trevethen and Bob Miller as they were about to make their regular Wednesday "Meals on Wheels" delivery to Dr. Lucy Ching at the Sunset Gardens complex on Crenshaw Blvd. (Dr. Ching, who is blind, was the subject of a previous article that can be accessed at the Archive section of this site by clicking Here).

Maxine and Bob arrived in a vehicle equipped with special boxes to keep hot meals hot and cold items, such as milk, fruit and sandwiches, refrigerated. All meals are prepared at a high rise Retirement Home facility on Maricopa. I was informed that the facility originally intended to use their kitchens to prepare meals for their residents but, when they decided to discontinue this service, it became a natural base for supplying the "Meals on Wheels" organization.

The Torrance Meals on Wheels branch covers eight or nine routes in the area, with about ten locations per route for a total of 85 people. It operates five days a week with Maxine and Bob volunteering to cover one route on Wednesday. However, they told me that they also substitute for other volunteers when necessary, especially during the summer months.

Dr. Lucy Ching met us at her apartment where Maxine and Bob described to her what they had brought. Today's fare included a hot meal of Turkey Roast with Cranberry and Celery, Milk and an Orange. There was also a Turkey and Cheese Sandwich and Grapefruit Juice for Lucy to have as an evening meal that night.

Maxine Trevethen and Bob Miller are both major participants in our RSVP program, with Maxine also volunteering at "PV Seniors at the Library" and Bob putting in hours at the El Segundo studio for "Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic", The Botanical Gardens and the "Swinging Singing Seniors".
Please call RSVP if you are interested in volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program. Additional help is always welcome.
