GETTING OUT THE MAIL - R.S.V.P. REQUIRED!
(Pete Porter -
RSVP)
The Torrance Chamber of Commerce is just one of the
organizations that take advantage of the services of a group of volunteers to
help with the frequent bulk mailings that are required. RSVP volunteer, Doris
Fritzel, told me that she helps to coordinate the various groups needed for this
task around the South Bay. Apart from the small group needed for the Chamber of
Commerce, mailing volunteers are also assigned to mailings at "the Small
Business Development Company"; "The Help Office" (an organization that provides
help for seniors); "the Manhatten Beach Free Clinic"; and the "Hospice
Foundation". Some volunteers provide this service at more than one of these
locations and, as RSVP Director Hope Witkowsky likes to refer to them, they can
truly be called the "Traveling Bulk Mailers"! Out of a total of around forty
volunteers involved in this activity many of them, such as the group at the
Torrance Chamber of Commerce, have been supplied by RSVP. Generally meeting at
least twice a month, this particular group consisted of: Gussie Goodman, Mary
Seifert, Olga Yung, lone Lang, Millie Brown, and Doris herself
Doris
informed me that the Chamber supplies the mailing labels and brings them the
outside cover letter and the inserts so that they can assemble the package. I
was told that the Chamber of Commerce mailing was relatively small; only 1,500
in size. However the Health Office list is over 13,000 and the Hospice has as
many as twenty volunteers putting out even more than that. Doris tells me that
this volunteer effort helps to save these organizations thousands of dollars
each year so the effort is well worth while.
All the ladies in this group
said that they really enjoy getting together like this and tend to treat it as a
pleasant social gathering rather than hard work. They are able to visit with
each other while they are doing the task at hand. Each mailing session takes
about five hours to complete and, at the suggestion of the RSVP office, most
locations also supply the volunteers with lunch.
As I took my leave, two
large boxes were deposited on the table and the real work of the day commenced.
However, I couldn't help noticing that two out of the four inserts that made up
this particular mailing were printed on orange paper. Halloween can't be very
far away!
